As part of its commitment to provide support for seniors with dementia and their family caregivers, Senior Concerns is offering quarterly Memory Cafes, with the next Memory Café scheduled for Saturday, August 10 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Senior Concerns, 401 Hodencamp Road in Thousand Oaks. Atria Hillcrest will be providing lunch.
A Memory Café is a social gathering where people with memory loss, along with their caregivers and/or friends and family, can come together in a safe, supportive and engaging environment. The Café gives participants a welcome break from the disease and the opportunity to socialize with others.
Not only do Memory Cafés help reduce social isolation, they can also unite people facing similar challenges. Getting together regularly with a group of friends can bring a sense of normalcy to a life that often becomes extremely focused on disease and disability. The Café can provide an opportunity to give and receive support, share ideas, and connect with others.
“We are excited to bring a Memory Café to the community,” says Martha Shapiro, Director of Programs at Senior Concerns. “We hope to provide an opportunity for people with dementia and their families to connect with one another and provide a network of support.”
